Prevention of Caste Based Discrimination
Prevention of Caste Based Discrimination
Introduction
Caste-based discrimination is a widespread and systemic problem in India, and it is one of the most significant obstacles to the country’s development. Despite the constitutional guarantees of equality, Dalits and other marginalized castes continue to face discrimination in all areas of life, including education, employment, housing, and healthcare.
The Caste-Based Discrimination Committee (CBDC) is a proposed body that would be responsible for investigating and addressing complaints of caste-based discrimination. The CBDC would be an independent body with the power to summon witnesses, collect evidence.
Objectives
The objectives of the CBDC are to:
- The primary objective of such a committee is to promote equality and ensure that individuals are not discriminated against based on their caste or social background.
- The committee is aiming to educate people about the negative impacts of caste-based discrimination and raise awareness about the rights of individuals regardless of their caste
- Providing support and assistance to individuals who have experienced caste-based discrimination, including guidance on seeking redressal through legal or institutional channels
- Regularly monitoring the prevalence of caste-based discrimination, evaluating the effectiveness of interventions, and adjusting strategies as needed.
- Investigate and address complaints of caste-based discrimination
- Promote awareness and understanding of caste-based discrimination
- Recommend measures to the government to prevent and eliminate caste-based discrimination
Programs
The CBDC would implement a variety of programs to achieve its objectives, including:
- Public awareness campaigns to educate the public about caste-based discrimination and its harmful effects
- Training programs for students on how to identify and address caste-based discrimination
- Advocacy for the rights of Dalits and other marginalized castes
The CBDC would be responsible for developing its own procedures and guidelines for investigating and addressing complaints of caste-based discrimination.
